A stepped floor is created which follows the street slope across the whole intervention area. The scaling of height differences from 2.5 to 40cm determines the circulation areas of pedestrian and vehicles, following the logic of “shared space”, while defining the sitting areas and green spaces.
The central area remains empty and retains the characteristics of a typical Mediterranean urban square. The central space in front of the Diplareios School remains empty, so that to highlight the most important building in the area. People may sit on tiers at both sides of the square.
The stepped floor is made of mosaic using gravels of different type, size and color. The gravel mosaic is interrupted by zones of dry shrub vegetation.
The project proposes the recycling of the existing security shutters, which are all covered by graffiti, in order to create sliding sunshades for the adjacent buildings.
